Jacqui Berg

Jacqui Berg interview
Pro Snowboarder + Artist
Interview conducted by: Duane Fernandez
For LFP.com featured designer / artist series

Who is Jacqui Berg?

She’s a wild and crazy mellow person who lives in her own head a little to much.

What did Jacqui want to be when she was a kid?

I loved math. So I decided early on I wanted to be a Mathematician, which grew into a love for Astronomy.

When I started taking classes in college I decided it was more mind boggling after you learned about it than before, and found that a little annoying. Right around that time I started traveling more with snowboarding and here I am.

Who do you ride for?

Vans Boots & Outerwear, Option, Nomis, Dragon, Elm, Skullcandy, Active

Why do you ride?

It’s incredible to be outside and surrounded by such beautiful scenery all the time. Then add fun, friends, challenge, traveling the world and no nine to five job and that sums it up.

Where do you find inspiration?

I never really know, people or things they do, places, or whatever jumps out at me and makes me think of how cool or unique it is.

5 people or things that influence you?

My thoughts influence me the most. The environment I am in influences me good or bad sometimes. My mother and father. History and being outdoors.

What do you think of Life?

It’s challenging, bizarre, beautiful, harsh, very real but sorta dreamy, and absolutely extraordinary.

How do you define success?

Achieving anything you can picture yourself doing in your head... all while being able to pay the bills on time.

How long have you been doing what you’re doing?

I’ve been snowboarding and living the gypsy life for about 8 years, which led me to start painting about 2 or 3 years ago.

Throughout the years, what did you have to learn the hard way?

Managing cash, holding my liquor, treating boyfriends like people. haha

Of all the places snowboarding has brought you, which is your favorite and why?

I loved Innsbruck, Austria. That city is gorgeous, it’s like standing in the middle of a story book.

Istanbul, Turkey was pretty insane too.

What is your favorite Color?

Seafoam Green

Advice – something (anything) that everyone should know about life.. Drink a lot of water.

Where do you see yourself in 15 years?

I hardly see myself in 5 or 10 years, so I’d have to hope that in 15 years I’m doing something I love and living every day like it’s 15 years earlier.

What do you think of Robots?

As long as they aren’t walking around or have saws for hands I don’t mind them.

We know that you are suffering a hip injury at this moment, can you tell us a little bit about that?

I was on a rail film trip early January in Denver. We hit this one down bar which had like a c loop that came off the end of the rail to the right about a foot, and wrapped around back down under the bar. We figured we could just pop over it or ride around it if need be. Of course I got my shot, and decided I wanted to try another trick and worst case scenario-ed it. I came off the rail early right in front of it and ran into the bar with the top of my front leg. The nose of my snowboard hooked under the bottom of the loop and whipped me around it. I partially dislocated my hip, which broke when the femur bone cracked it’s way out of the socket. Luckily the rail broke where it was welded or I would have probably broken my femur too - Ouch!

What are some of your professional goals?

Just to reach the full potential I think I have.

Not only are you a professional snowboarder, but you are quite the artist as well…  Have you always been involved with art?

Not so much, it was a little hobby I had since I was little. I liked crafts and drawing, but didn’t really start painting or pursuing it at all until right now.

And it’s still sort of on the back burner to snowboarding for now.

What makes you pick up a paintbrush?

I love color and watching a picture come together.
It’s relaxing.
